Tips for Frugal Halloween Costumes

Since the beginning of time....

Or ever since I can remember, I have been smitten by Hallow's Eve! It has always been my favorite holiday (except Christmas, but I mean is that even a debate?!).

Growing up in a large family, being a daughter of a farmer and a homemaker, we had to get creative when it came to Halloween. Credit given to my mom and her frugal-ness and sewing capabilities we had a plethora of fun costumes to choose from. It was like its own little holiday, getting to retrieve the garbage sacks full of Halloween stuff from the attic every year! But when I got to Jr. High I decided to take it into my own hands! And that, ladies and gents is when it all started!

So if you're like me and hate buying the prepackaged costumes (because of the price, not because I don't think they are cute, cause I do...well, most of them) read my tips that have worked for me over the years. Because I have found great joy and thrill in making and "throwing together" homemade costumes every year.

Here are some from the past, wish I had ALL of them to show you, but that would just take SOOOO long!

Queen of Hearts and Ace of Hearts
- 2007 Brett and I were engaged
Disco Dancer and the Disco Ball (Preggo belly)
- 2010 Pregnant with Azure
Chef, Waitress and Crab in a Pot
- 2011 Azure 8 mo old

Cutest crab you will ever see!

Here is a break down of what I spent each year:

Queen of hearts:
Tutu: Dollar store with a deck of mini cards hot glued on. $1 (already had the mini deck)
Large Card: Dollar store, Pinned to shirt
Tiara and Heart Wand:  a princess set from the Dollar Store, can't go wrong with a Tiara wearing a tiara!
Heart Necklace: Was given to me as a Bday gift from my bff. FREE!
Brett's Joker Hat: FREE! My mom always made us skiing hats back in the day and this was one of them that we borrowed.
Large Ace Card: 2 poster boards from the Dollar Store
Grand Total: $5!

Disco Ball and Dancer:
ME:
Boots: $4 from the DI, spray painted silver (already had the paint)
Sequin Skirt and Top: Both from the DI, think I paid $2 for each
Disco Ball earrings and Necklace: Borrowed from a Friend... FREE!!

Brett:
Bell Bottoms: Borrowed
Shirt: His white dress up
Vest: From his hot wife's closet!
Necklace: Also stolen from his wife!
Grand TOTAL: $8!

Chef, Waitress and Crab in a Pot:
Me:
Everything I had in my closet except the apron, $0.97 @ Walmart!
Brett: Apron and Hat both $0.97 @ Walmart!
Azure:
My sister found a hat at KID2KID that was from some restaurant for $2. It had the eyes and tentacles on it. So I took them off and hot glued them to a sweater Azure already had. Glued the eyes to a CARS winter hat I found at Walmart which also came with red mittens for $5. She had red pants; and the red socks were $1 @ TARGET. Kitchen Cart: Borrowed from Brett's mom. And the pot... From my kitchen cupboard!
Grand TOTAL: $10.91!

Tips for Frugal Halloween Costumes

  • Think ahead. Try and come up with what everyone will be dressing up as early on in the month (or year, that's how much I love it!). That will make it so that when you are at the store and you see a random item that would go perfect with a costume you can get it; and save the headache of trying to make 1 trip, last minute to Walmart and be stuck wearing an XXXL banana costume cause it was the only thing left. Or my least favorite, wearing NO COSTUME AT ALL?!!! gasp!

  • Hit up the 2nd hand/ thrift and dollar stores! You can never go wrong there, as you can see with my costumes from the past.

  • Make a list of what everyone's going to be and what their costume needs, and keep it in your purse at all times. When you are out shopping you can refer to the list. I have to do this with everything in life or I can't remember a thing. If I didn't do this Azure would be wearing an orange wig, hot pink coat, 1 rain boot 1 flip flop and a church dress! No Joke!

  • Remember, you don't have to be "crafty" to do a homemade costume. It really is EASY! It just takes a little imagination and a little trust in yourself.

  • Make a budget, it helps with getting creative! My budget this year was $20. This is the most I've ever spent on costumes but I think I still rocked it.

  • Check your own closet, I guarantee you will find at least 2 things you can use!

  • Once everyone chooses what they want to be (or if you still have the luxury of choosing for your kids) find a pic on the internet so you can envision the goal.

Now for this years inspiration....Are you ready?!...........

Azure

Brett

Me

Hahaha... don't you just love the dancing oompa-loompa?!

I'm going to let you in on a little confession of mine. When I was pregnant with Azure, Brett and I were looking for ideas of what to be for Halloween that year. I saw a picture of a toddler as an oompa-loompa and I told Brett that when our (unborn) child was that age they were going to be an oomp-loompa! That was 2 years of waiting for this moment! Wow! It feels good to get that off my chest! Though I'm a little embarrassed that you all know now how weird I am!

Anyways...
To achieve this years fun I hit up my local Goodwill while out one day and with my "list" I was able to find EVERYTHING I needed. I did a happy dance of course! And even better, it was all in my budget of $20!
Purple Women's Blazer
$5.29

Blue Medical Scrubs
$3.99 each

White pants and Brown Long Sleeve Shirt
$2.29 and $1.79
Women's Long Sleeve Striped Shirt
$3.79

I was happier than a nerd at comic-con when I got home that day! Laying out all my treasures (after washing them first of course) and beaming in my success of the day. I then got out my sewing machine and went to work.

I cut off the legs on the pants and gave them a new hem
I took the women's striped shirt and cut it up, making leggings wrist cuffs and a collar for my little oompa-loompa.
Made suspenders from white elastic from my sewing junk, hot glued clamps on, and cut brown felt circles.

Grand Total: $7.87!
For Violet Beauregard all I had to do was add a red belt from my closet, and come Halloween I shall stuff myself with a pillow, and color my hair blue!
Grand Total: $7.98!

For Willy Wonka I dug through my scarves and found one for the bow-tie and one to add some frill! I just need to find a top hat and make a cane!
Grand Total: $5.29!
Making this years GRAND TOTAL: $21.14!
I went over budget a little but I'm still proud of it all and can't wait to dress up!

*Come back and visit  next week for pictures of us all dressed up!

And an extra bonus, I found this cute Elephant costume size 2-4 for $7 which retails at $27.00 in stores! I already know what I want to do to make this costume even more Azurific!

I have next year planned already :)

                                      I'm thinking Zoo Animals and
                                          a Zoo Keeper!

Good thing we have a whole year
to get her used to wearing it ;)

HAPPY HAUNTING EVERYONE!

*Update: Here is how it all turned out....

Computers, Internet, Technology...OH MY!

So I know I made a vow to everyone that I would be a devoted blogger. Well I am sorry that I have left you all feeling lost and abandoned. You know it's true.

Well I'm BACK!

We have been experiencing technical difficulties in the Reeder household. So as you all know, when we moved we lost the beloved breathe of some of our most important members of the family; aka: computer #1, external hard drive, and screen function of computer #2. So we took our babies in for surgery to a friend down the road and he was able to work his magic. However, we lost all our programs and data from both computers. But the saddest of all...our hard drive did not make it. We were told that it needed further help to recover our lost data. I'm going to stop there before the tears start to flow POUR!

Anyways, after all that was said and done; we lost our internet connection for good. So we had to get that fixed and heaven knows that is not a speedy process. So we had to do everything off of our phones. BAH!

I apologize for my ranting and whining but I am excited to be in blog land once again. And I am even more excited about some upcoming events I want to share with you i.e. family pictures this coming Saturday and HALLOWEEN!!!!
The most wonderfully, spooktacular, fabtabulous holiday ever!!!!!

See you soon....

P.S. if anyone knows of good ways to force feed a feisty toddler, let me know. Not sure if she is coming down with something or if she is just not interested lately. But she WON'T eat a thing, and it's been about 4 or 5 days of this! All of her teeth have already cut through so I'm pretty sure it can't be from that, but I am at a dead end here. So any helpful advice is always great! Thanks!

DIY Menu Stand

So a few months ago when I was trying to give my bland boring apartment kitchen/dining room some oomph, I really wanted to makeover my MENU board.

As you can see in this BEFORE photo I was in dire need!

I made this one about 3 years ago; and I'm sure everyone can attest to how fast things go in and out of style these days. Another reason for the overhaul was that in my home before I had it hung on the wall, but now I have a tall bar that I wanted to display it on.

There's always something that can be improved or glamorized, right?!

So I hunted for something that would be a great pedestal. I was an original Goldilocks for weeks. Not too tall, Not too short, Not too fat, Not too skinny.... But juuusssttt right!

I originally wanted one made of wood, because I imagined I was going to need to cut at some point to make it the way I imagined.

It took me a few weeks until I found the perfect one! Can't beat a $2.99 candlestick @ ROSS!

However this one made me settle for metal it was my only choice and I was getting impatient! Luckily I have a hubbers who will lovingly spend an hour or two.... or three sawing metal in an awkward fashion for me in the middle of the night. (J/K it didn't take him all that long.)

Unfortunately I deleted the only photo of the candlestick, in original form, I had. So you will just have to imagine with me.

First I disassembled the candlestick as to make workflow go smoother.

I wanted my frame to sit snugly inside the top of the candlestick so that it looked like it was all one piece. This is where the metal cutting hand-saw came in handy (see I told you I would be needing to cut something)

So I measured and used a sharpie to mark my lines. I wanted a good solid line that I could see well while cutting, and I was just going to paint over the pink anyways. I know, I know, who doesn't want pink in their kitchen?! Minus my cute grandma who had a pink strawberry kitchen back in the day :)

Then my manly Brett took over the cutting because I wasn't strong enough (due to a recently broken hand at the time) to grip the metal piece and the saw to use enough force to cut.

After he cut to the end of my marks I folded in the tabs to create a support for underneath my frame.
This is what it looked like after reassembling the candlestick.

The top of the candlestick was like a bowl, so to make it flush I stuck some foam that I got at the dollar store into the hole on both sides. I then epoxied around the edges to fuse the candlestick and frame together to create a solid piece.

I then had the dilemma of choosing which color of blue I wanted,
BLUE OCEAN BREEZE or TRUE BLUE.
I had recently painted some picture frames to go in the dinning room with these colors, so I didn't have to spend any more money! YAY!

I then hot glued a matching piece of felt over the foam, and it made for a nice little shelf to hold my dry erase marker........

AND HERE IT IS!!

I love both colors so much that I made a mason jar candy dish to go next to my menu stand. I couldn't give up one blue. I LOVE BLUE!!

Oh and FYI; yes I update the menu every week! It helps me have motivation to cook and plan ahead :)

I miss you more and more each day

7 years... 7 long years since I have been able to hug my Dad. Since I have been able to talk to, laugh with, work alongside my Dad. 45 years old is way to short to be on this earth, 18 years old is way to young to start living without your Daddy.

Not an hour goes by in a day, that I don't think about him. I watch Azure playing, and I think how much she would make him laugh. I watch mine and Brett's marriage flourish and hope he would be proud of how much of an example he was to me as to what a husband and father and eternal marriage should be. I see teenagers with their dad's and hope that they respect and appreciate their dad's and all they do.

There has been a lot of things happen in the last 7 years of my life that I wish so badly he could have been there for. My wedding. The birth of Azure. Meeting and being friends with Brett. Going for a helicopter ride with Brett (which I know he would have LOVED), Helping fix and tinker on things when we bought our first house. The countless times I wished I could have called him up, gone to his work, or found him working on a tractor to ask his advice and seek counsel from him.

A few months before my dad died he taught a powerful lesson at youth conference about accepting and understanding the Lord's will. That talk hit me hard that day, it was something I had never really thought about in such a way, but I learned from it. The spirit testified to me that no matter what the Lord's plan was, that I could trust in him that he knew what was best for me. That if I let him lead and guide me, that I could make it through the tough times in life. I reflect back on that day often. I'm not sure if my Dad felt inspired to talk about that subject or not. But I believe that he was inspired; so that when the time came, I could find comfort in knowing that my Dad gave everything he had to the gospel. And that he had a testimony stronger than anyone I've ever known. That he understood the power of God's will, and that if he could accept it. I could too. No matter what. By realizing this and full heartedly relying on the Lord to pull me through, I have gained a deeper love and appreciation for my Savior and The Atonement.

I remember looking up to my dad from a very young age. I wanted to do everything he did. He not only taught me spiritually, but he taught me life long skills of hard work. He taught me how to use a shovel, and get an irrigation pipe started. He taught me how to plant, care for, grow and harvest the sweetest crops. He taught me how to drive (at age 10) various tractors, dump trucks and combines. How to change the oil on a vehicle. He taught me how to raise pigs and fix fence. He taught me how to fix and jimmy rig any household problem. He taught me how to back up a trailer and run the best produce stand in town. He taught me how to milk a cow and shoot a gun. He taught me to work until the job was complete, not until I was tired.

Some of my fondest memories with him were riding in the tractor with him while he leveled or planted a field. I would lay down on the back rest behind him and I would fall asleep to the vibrations of the tractor. I did this til I was 16!

I loved going to work with him at Utah State and coloring on his white board with his fruit flavored dry erase markers. I also loved going to school with him because that meant we got to go to lunch together. Just me and him. Those were the best, to have time to ourselves.

I loved pickin corn and watermelon early in the mornings. When I hadn't earn the "right" to pick yet, I would follow him down the corn rows and he would fill my arms as high as he could without me dropping them. He knew how to pick the sweetest watermelon and cantaloupe. It was always a party pickin watermelons. He would challenge us by throwing watermelons at us, trying to knock us over while trying to catch them. We would devour 10 or more watermelons in a morning.

So many fun and fond memories with him on the farm, camping, boating, and just being my Dad.

Too many thoughts to put into words. I just hope that I can be the parent to my children that he was to me. His love, sacrifice and devotion to the Lord was a key example to me in how I wanted to live my life. I want to serve the Lord, and share the gospel like he did. I know that families are forever and I am grateful for the knowledge that I have in knowing that I will see my Daddy again someday. That Brett will be able to meet him in person, and that Azure will get to throw her arms around his neck and call him Papa. The Atonement is real. It doesn't get easier over time. But with increasing faith and love in Christ, He eases our pain and comforts our hearts.

September 26, 2005

I will never forget the day. It was only a couple weeks into my first semester at Utah State. It was a beautiful fall day. I was walking home from a class somewhere around 3:30pm, when I felt this overwhelming feeling come over me. I can't explain it to this day, but I felt the urgency to call my dad. I tried calling him but he didn't answer. So I left him a message, I remember what I said, "I feel like I have a question I need to ask you, but I'm not sure what it is. Maybe something about the apartment, maybe something about school. I don't know but give me a call when you get this"....
It was about 3:30pm when the crash occurred. In some way I feel like I felt the presence of my dad leave this earth; and that is why I had such an overwhelming feeling of needing to talk to him.

He never got my message, and it wasn't until a few hours later that I would even hear anything about the accident. I heard about it when my best friend/roommates mom called and said she saw it on the news and was wondering if it was my Dad. I turned on the news and called my mom. They new nothing yet. No one could reach him. All we knew was that his truck was parked at Greenline Equipment and that he was supposed to be on a field trip with his students. Time past, I don't know how long but it felt like forever. I must have called his phone and Ryan McEntire's (one of his students and a family friend) phone at least 100 times. I knew that if I found Ryan, I would find my Dad. He was his shadow!

All my roommates but Wendy were gone. In this time I had called a friend to come and get me and take me home. He had shown up and then I got a knock on the door. It was my cousin Natalie and her husband Mark. They came over to check on me. Natalie was shaking and distraught, she was very close with my Dad. I tried to act calm and tell myself that at any minute he was going to call me back and all would be well. I kept calling my mom to see if she had learned any news. But nothing. Then somewhere around 9 pm (I think) my cousin Preston showed up at my door. He said to call my mom. I told him I had just gotten off the phone with her. He insisted that I called again. I called, my moms friend Kellie answered and when my mom came on the line, I knew. All I could say as she was talking was "Don't say that! Don't say that to me!"

Next, all I remember is lying on the floor in my kitchen sobbing. My friend packed my bags and we got in the car. The longest hour drive of my life! I don't think any words were spoken, I just cried, sat in silence and cried some more. Finally as we pulled up to my house, the street was lined with cars. As we pulled up to the drive way, I took a deep breathe... and ran inside. My younger brother Tavan, 13, ran to me and all I remember is hugging and sobbing from that point on. All my family was there, except my sister and her family who were making the drive from New Mexico. And my Brother and his family were making their way from Pocatello, ID. Later that night after most had gone home, the door bell rang one last time. It was my friend Ryan's dad. The friend I had tried calling earlier that day to find my dad. It wasn't until that point that I realized. Ryan was gone too.

The following days were a roller coaster of emotions, mixed with blurs, and chaos.

The night of viewing, I remember getting on my knees and pleading with the Lord to give me strength to make it through the next day. To comfort me and and my family and to help me understand His will in all of this. As I prayed, I felt the presence of someone behind me. I thought it was maybe my brother-in-law or one of the many other people sleeping in the house. I continued praying. As I closed my prayer, I still felt someone standing behind me. I turned around, and no one was there. But I know that it was my Dad who was standing there. He was there helping me pray. He was there to, one last time, check on me. I sat there for what seemed like forever but was probably only a few seconds. And then, he was gone. I felt his presence leave the room. That experience solidified my testimony of life after death. It was such a comfort to me.

Over the next few days, I really began to feel the love and support of family and friends. To learn what it meant to serve others. I am grateful to the many people in my life that offered up prayers and service to my family. And especially to those who reached out to help and comfort me. I am forever in debt to many of these marvelous people.

There have been many miracles since then where I knew that my Daddy was still watching over and guiding my family. And protecting us. Many things have changed in the dynamic of my family that otherwise might not have. But I am grateful for what I have learned and how I have grown. I would give anything to have my Dad back, but I wouldn't trade what it has taught me for the world!

I LOVE YOU DADDY!!

I'm leavin on a jet plane, don't know when I'll be back again...

Now this was the first time traveling by flight with little miss RaeRae, and let's just face it.... I was TERRIFIED!!! She is a very happy girl, but confining her in any way (she sat on my lap) for 2.5 hours turns her into the HULK! She is a very curious, adventurous, independent girl. So I was really nervous to how she would react; and I was very much prepared to be kicked off the plane for disturbing the peace. :)

So to prepare myself; I read blogs, asked friends, studied flight regulations on traveling with children and packed my suitcase like a BOSS! This is where all those hours wasted playing dr mario in college paid off! Taking only 1 carry-on and 1 personal bag for 2 people, was a challenge. Diapers for 4 days alone took up a good portion of my beloved space.

These were some of the items I packed in my purse to keep the tot busy:
School toolbox (because I hate random loose items) containing: Crayons, coloring pad, sticker booklet, and gel window stickers.
I don't think we would have survived without the stickers! Especially when we had a window seat!!! I tried to save the stickers for when her patients had run out, save the best for last! It totally worked!

Take & Toss sippy cup with straw hole. Cut ordinary straws in 1/3's . This is a great fine motor activity that requires focus... aka sitting still and quiet!

Pom Poms and plastic container with a hole cut in the top of the lid. Another great fine motor activity!
All of these were homemade and/or found at the $ store!

I let her go crazy with the stickers! Putting them on the window, tray, herself, myself, anywhere that entertained her!
I brought along her puppy blanket, her lovey, so that she would have familiarity and something to comfort her when she was tired or upset. She never slept on the plane, but it did keep her company.

I also packed a variety of snacks that she loves and that would otherwise be somewhat of a novelty. I had chocolate covered raisins & teddy grahams. I also packed her a lunch (my child eats ALOT, snacks are never enough for her..... I'm afraid she gets that from me!) containing a pb&j, string cheese and oyster crackers. I brought her a sippy cup of milk and had apple juice in my purse to refill. And the
TOP SECRET WEAPON
used in controlling the happiness of my child?!
Dum Dum suckers!!!!
They were my saving grace! For several reasons:
#1 Cabin air pressure. The constant swallowing eased the pressure in her ears.
#2 Mouth full = quiet child.
#3 It was a novelty! I don't give her candy very often so she was thrilled to have a sucker!
*Just make sure you bring plenty of wipes on the plane....
I hate sticky fingers.... Unless they are served on a platter at Wingers. MMMmmmmmm..............

Things to do before getting on the Plane?
These will depend on you and your tot. Every situation is different.
  •  Make sure you put a fresh diaper on right before boarding. It is ridiculous to try and change a diaper in the claustrophobic bathrooms on the plane.
  • Let your child run around as much as possible once you get to the gate. Let them get their wiggles out!
  • Show them the airplanes outside and explain to them what is about to happen. And also explain what they should expect on the airplane i.e. sitting nicely on mommy's lap, no screaming, flying high in the sky...
  • When boarding the plane stop in the outside gap between airplane and tunnel, so that they can see the body of the airplane, this helps them realize that what they see in the sky and on the tarmac is what they about to go on.
  • Breathe!

And if all this fails you..... Pray that you sit near a dear old lady that will put on a barf-bag puppet show for your little one!

Birthday Bash

So mid July my Bro-in-law called and wanted to surprise my sis her 30th bday; by flying me and Azure back to Utah for a visit. Well the time went by quickly while I was there, and of course I feel like I didn't take nearly enough photos or video while we were there. But we had a blast every minute! Here are some of the pictures from our trip! Sorry the pics are kinda crazily placed...

Azure is OBSESSED with Helicopters and Airplanes! Could it be that she takes after her daddy? This girl can spot/hear an aircraft coming from a mile away and will point them out and start waving; before most people even notice that there is anything flying overhead.

Here is the SURPRISE!!!

Sorry this video is sideways... I'm blonde....

Azure and Izzy were BEST FRIENDS (except when Azure would pull Izzy's hair)
